Burdon Folk Ensemble (Lviv) to Perform in Winnipeg
BURDON Folk Ensemble from Lviv, Ukraine will be performing in concert in Winnipeg on Feb. 8, 2008 at 7:30 PM with a concert at Jubilee Place – 180 Riverton Ave. Burdon’s visit to Winnipeg is being sponsored by the Rozmai Ukrainian Dance Company - one of the prominent Ukrainian dance companies in Winnipeg. Tickets are available from Oseredok, Kalyna, Ukrainian Voice as well as from the members of the Rozmai Ukrainian Dance Company.
Burdon ("bour-don" - drone) is a six member folk band from Lviv, in western Ukraine. The young folk musicians that formed the group in 2002, have quickly developed their music-making into an impressive level and have built up a rich repertoire of traditional tunes, rural ritual songs, old ballads and cheerful dances. They have produced two CD’s and have travelled widely in Europe.
Burdon's repertoire is based mostly on traditional Carpathian mountain music from Ukraine as well as the neighbouring countries of Hungary, Slovakia, Poland and Romania. Their music is based on age-old tunes in modern arrangements, which paint a vivid and dramatic world - full of excitement, love, mysticism and enchantment. Many of the songs are taken from the local traditions of unique Ukrainian ethnic minorities who live around the Ukrainian-Polish-Slovak border: the regions of the Lemko, Boiko and Hutsul peoples.
With this multicultural mix, Burdon creates its own unique sound with female vocals, fiddles, the bouzouki, hurdy-gurdy, double bass and percussions. They have played many festival concerts throughout Ukraine, Poland, Hungary, Russia and Germany, where they have easily captured the attention of the audiences.
Burdon uses only acoustic folk instruments for the best reproduction of
the old songs and dances, an atmosphere which hasn’t changed through the centuries. But their music is also an attempt to give it a modern authentic reflection. According to Ivan Ohar, “young musicians don't invent new tunes, they play old and often very famous ones, but with their own arrangements and modern influences”.
In Canada, in addition to the Winnipeg concert, Burdon will do a series of concerts in Alberta (Edmonton, Athabasca, Banff, Jasper and Calgary) and as well in Toronto. This is BURDON’S first visit to Canada and it is anticipated that the Canadian audiences will also be enchanted by their energy filled and passionate music!
